Survival Lessons II

With the reference of Animal Planet, I am going to tell you a few survival lessons. You never know when you might need them.

Against lion

If you set off on a trip through the African bush and savannah, you need to take along with you at least a firearm, pepper spray or a large stick. Any of the above can be used as a defensive weapon but firearms should be used responsibly as a deterrent and not with the intention of inflicting lethal force.

One telltale sign that you need to stay away since there might be a pride of lions is a half eaten carcass as lions are very protective of their meat

To recognize a lion from its tracks, you need to know the following. Lion's tracks would look like a jigsaw puzzle piece with one pointed and 3 oval marks in an arc over the top

To improve your chances of avoiding a pride you can make noise while you walk and stay out in open spaces. If this is surprising to you, the answer is by staying in the open the lions can see you and making noise is so that you do not startle them.

If you do come across a pride of lions anyway, you should be most concerned if you see mating lions or cubs.

If the lions notice your presence and a large male lion, probably the head of the pride takes a particular interest, the best way to avoid an attack is by staying calm and slowly moving away from the lion. Generally a lion has no intention of hurting a human so you don't want to provoke them to attack by acting aggressive. You also don't want to run away as that will make you seem like a prey.

If the lion still looks undeterred and charges, you should stand your ground, shout and wave your arms making yourself as big as possible. Thus you would appear a formidable foe and the lion might change his mind.

Now if you have to use your defensive weapons, you should give the lion a direct shot of pepper spray. If you use firearm (responsibly), you can fire a shot at the ground in front of the lion.

If you missed with the spray and the lion comes at you fast and furious and pounces on you, to improve your chances of staying alive, you should cover your neck and throat as that is a vulnerable area that a lion looks to attack.

If the lion suddenly stops moving and just lies on top of you, you should do nothing and just stay still. The lion may lose interest over time.
